bias

Not mentioning who, or whether in history, fiction or reality ...

It seems that some people (whether in history, fiction, or real life) who seem to understand ideological possession or bias, in others, and to recognize and see clearly such bias - in others ... seem blind as a bat when it comes to recognizing such bias in themselves - even if such bias is blatantly obvious to others - even if they themselves are obviously ignoring relevant data, adhering to ideas in spite of evidence rather than because of the evidence - and, have just shaken their head [metaphorically] about the bias of others - but they still manifest such bias themselves!

Tolstoy wrote

I know that most men—not only those considered clever, but even those who are very clever, and capable of understanding most difficult scientific, mathematical, or philosophic problems—can very seldom discern even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as to oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions they have formed, perhaps with much difficulty—conclusions of which they are proud, which they have taught to others, and on which they have built their lives. 1
